Lifestyle newborn sessions are slightly different than "traditional newborn sessions" that show heavily posed images of baby, and sometimes many different props. I prefer lifestyle newborn sessions because they are baby led with very little posing; they are natural, organic, and candid like babies themselves. Your child doesn't have to be under two weeks old, meaning it's never too late to schedule whether baby is 5 days old or 5 weeks old! Of course baby will sleep more the younger they are, but your newborn doesn't even have to be asleep for your session; I've photographed many wide awake newborns and the images are just as adorable as if baby was sound asleep.
These sessions also give the family a chance to be photographed with baby. Similar to fresh 48 sessions (which take place in hospital or birthing center within the first 48 hours of baby's birth), the goal is to candidly document all of baby's features and natural interactions and connection with family/siblings.
They can either take place in the client's nursery/home or on location, and normally last 1-2 hours tops (although there is no time limit; stopping for feeding and changing is totally normal).
Lifestyle newborn sessions are authentic, stress free and so beautiful.
For solo images of baby the safest areas to use are a nice, soft bed (parents' bed or baby's crib) or a heavily blanketed baby basket. These images are still baby led, without forced and unnatural posing. I can supply a basket safe for baby, and a few props if desired. Otherwise I show up with my camera, and all we need is baby and family.
Posing is safe, natural and simple.
If baby is more comfortable and content in mom or dad's arms, then that's where we'll keep them. Don't stress if baby only wants to be held during the session, they're meant to be held at this age anyway. These sessions should be natural and stress free for baby and family. And we can certainly still capture all of baby's features while still being held.
