Being a natural light inspired photographer, I recommend booking sessions either in the morning or in the evening when the sunlight is low and not so harsh. My personal favorite time to shoot is during "golden hour" which is the hour just before sunset. Keep in mind when deciding what time of the year you're looking to book a session that the sun sets much earlier in the fall/winter and much later in the spring/summer (this is important to remember for taking off of work or having plans before/after your session as well as being able to arrive a few minutes early so that the session can begin right on time). If you're unsure on which location you'd prefer, check out my blog on some of my most popular locations here.
When planning what to wear for your session, a couple of things to consider are coordinating with your location and with each other. If your session is taking place in a park full of greenery, try to avoid wearing all shades of green so you don't end up blending in with the background. The idea is to stand out against the background so that the main focus of the images is always you.
When it comes to coordinating with each other, choose colors and patterns that work well together. Mixing and matching is always good; if one person is wearing print, have another family member wear a solid color. Try to stay away from really busy prints on everyone's clothing so that it doesn't distract from your face, which is the first thing your eyes should be drawn to when looking at a portrait.
Pick one color and have fun with different shades and patterns of it.
Of course when it comes to children's portraits,
completely matching can be a cute idea too ;)
Clients often ask for color recommendations when booking their session, and I personally go back and forth between my favorites. I love light, pastel colors but also bold, solid colors. So my advice is to wear what works with the background, and what is YOU!
Most importantly, dress for comfort!
Just as I'll always say yes to bold, solid colors, I'll always love soft, pastel tones also. And both will always turn out beautiful! Just depends which style is more you.
